Make sure your tree lights up in the right way!

Did you know electrical faults are one of the top three causes of house fires?

This is something worth considering more closely as we contemplate our plans for this years Christmas Tree and Christmas Lights. You may find you need an extra power point or two, which it is best arranged prior to putting up any Christmas lights. It is also a great idea to check your safety switches are in working order.

Here are 10 tips to help you keep your family safe this Christmas…

  1. Even if there are 4 or more outlets on your power board there should be no more than 3 sets of lights per power board.
  2. NEVER use double adaptors.
  3. Inspect your Christmas lights and fairy lights for any sign of damage or wear and tear.
  4. Don’t use light sets with missing globes.
  5. Make sure electric cords are completely uncoiled and are not placed under rugs or mats.
  6. Place your tree as far as possible from any heat source, curtains or furnishings.
  7. Maintain water in base of natural Christmas trees to stop then drying out.
  8. Remove lights from natural Christmas trees once they show signs of drying.
  9. Avoid running light cables through windows or doors as this can cause wires to break or become frayed.
  10. Check that your smoke alarms are in working order.
